Potty Training Update

I decided to start potty training this morning. I put a cheap plastic shower curtain on the floor to protect the carpet from any accidents and set the three potties that we have in front of the TV. After breakfast we turned on a movie and I gave the kids their sippy cups and cranked the A/C.

Today was really just a test, to see who was ready and who was not. If they're all ready, great, they can all do this together. If not, well, we'll try one at a time. It turns out that Juli is ready. She was the only one that got her pee in the potty. Elisha is, well, not so ready. She definitely knows when she has to go, but she did not want to go on the potty. She waited, and waited, and waited, until I gave it and put her diaper back on, and she immediately peed. I mean immediately. KJ is somewhere in between. He peed while he was on the potty, but sprayed me instead of pointing himself down into the potty. I'm going to chalk that one up as a learning experience for both of us.

Hopefully we'll make a little more progress tomorrow. We might try some underwear on Juli and KJ. I may also see if Elisha wants to wear them. I'll let you know how it goes.

  1. This is a great idea! I love the shower curtain. We are about to give potty training a shot with our 2 yr-old son. I'm not looking forward to it, although luckily, I think Mom will head up that effort!

  2. Dude, just went through all of this. Was not fun. Like you all 3 were different. Simone needed no training at all. Took to the potty right out of the gate. Ellie was a bit retentive and would wait forever before going to the potty. No accidents but it had the same effect as being constipated constantly for her. Thomas really wasn't too interested. When he finally was he would pee but not poop in the potty. Took a a month of wearing underwear before he finally got it right (and many a soiled underwear). A trick that we used to get him to aim into the toilet was to make it like a game. Told him to make bubbles at the bottom of the potty. ;) some people use candy as a treat for going to the potty correctly. We didn't want to go that route. One last hint... In a few months when they are ready to sleep the night without diapers (that's when you have it made) just remember no bottles before bed and make it routine that they go potty before getting into bed (this may mean weening them off of nightime bottle before you get to that point if you haven't already). Good luck bro'!

  3. Gotta love the photo!!!!

I really did like your idea of putting a shower curtain if you have carpet. Potty training wasn't so hard for me with the girls--I took them outside and let them play all day on our patio. Had plenty of drinks and snacks and put the potty chair in the corner of the patio. They wore panties and they didn't enjoy the feeling of the pee running down their legs. Yeah, a solid week of just panties and outdoor play.

I hear boys are much harder. Good Luck.
